The clay season’s started. First was the green clay in the Southeast of the US: Ponte Vedra and Charleston. Sunshine took the title in Ponte Vedra and Sam Stosur took the title (comprehensively) in Charleston. In Andalucia, Flavs prevailed. In Barcelona, Francesca Schiavone came out on top.

Awesome.

What will I be doing during tennis’ off-season?

Well, after the Davis Cup final that takes place this Friday-Sunday (that’s Dec. 4-Dec. 6) in Barcelona, there’s no tennis left. No competitive tennis. None. Nada. Zilch. Cero.

Not true, if you’re me. I have collected all my favorite matches from this year and such and will be watching them. I will not be bored these three weeks. However, it will still be a long three weeks. I will be happy when the break is over. But, until then, it’s re-runs for me. Trust me; the matches I chose are the golden ones; the pick of the litter, AFAIC.

Realistically Speaking

Okay now. There are a lot of things that people want to happen at the US Open this year. I know it is the final Grand Slam. The players’ very SOULS are at stake here, people! Serena and Shank-a-Lot have the chance to go 3-for-4.  Can they do it? Seeing how Serena has not won any other titles this year EXCEPT Grand Slams just goes to show where her main interests lay. On the other hand, I must say that Shanx better hope Nole gets his side. If not, hope someone takes Rafa out before Rafa gets to him.

Well, after the ladies quarterfinals have been played, we’re left with three who were there last year and a first-timer. Don’t worry, Dinara. I promise Venus won’t be gentle.

It’s actually a big surprise to me that Safina even managed to pull herself together enough to make it to the semis. Alas, she has the unfortunate pleasure of facing one of the most ferocious and unforgiving returners of serve, second only to probably her sister. And although Venus lost to Safina in a tight 3-setter in Rome, that was clay. This is grass.

The other semi will feature Elena D. and Serena. Lena makes up for her lack of a great serve (it has improved) with superb groundies and returns. This should be the more… dramatic match of the two. Unless Serena goes out there in kill-a-bitch mode.

I’d honestly be shocked if we don’t end up with another Williams final. I’m perfectly fine with that. Wimbledon tends to bring out the high-quality in some people. Venus is a perfect example of that.
