The Canadian leg of the US Open Series was enough to make one give up tennis altogether. It easily takes the prize for the WTF-factor this year. And no, I do not mean World Tour Finals when I use WTF. It had some of us literally scratching our heads in utter confusion as to what was going on.

Clearly there was something in the water in both Toronto and Montreal. Seeds crashed and burned early in the tournaments to qualifiers unknown. Chances are if you were a high seed and were pretty much already written into the next round, you lost your match. That is the beauty of the game nowadays. Nothing is written in stone.

Or is it?

I’ve been suffering from some serious “Australian Open Lag.”

What’s that mean? Well, living on the east coast of the US does no favors for the body during the start of the Grand Slam season. When you are a TENNIS FAN (as opposed to a CASUAL FAN), you stay up until 3:30am to catch the matches live on ESPN2 and not wait until the replay later on in the day. This has adverse effects, of course; effects like lack of sleep, irritablity, and all-around lethargy. So, when the major is finally over, I need a day or two to recover. That is why this post is coming a couple days late.

… is officially over and done with.

After the US Open, has the tennis gotten any better? Um, the short answer is a blatant “no.” The general consensus (at least from my point of view), is that the tennis is NEVER stellar after the US Open to begin with. All the players are pretty much just trying to make it through the rest of the year, some playing injured and whatnot. After all, they get FINED if they do not play some tournaments like Masters.

So, we’re left with them pretty much half-assing it out there, massaging the ball around. Well, I will not say that. These are athletes and by nature they are competitive. I know they will compete until the last ball is struck; or at least try to. But I think this year was one of those prime examples of why the tennis schedule is too long (more prevalent in the ATP than WTA).
